New restaurants always create a buzz, but La Gloria opened its doors with the roar of a lion! Beloved and talented chef Johnny Hernandez brings his love of Mexico’s creative street food to San Antonio’s historic Pearl Brewery.
These are not your ordinary tacos! There’s a great selection of ceviches and fish dishes too. Ever tried Tlayudas from Oaxaca? They’re like a Mexican version of a pizza – the base is a thin flatbread topped with a black bean puree, avocados, tomatoes…it’s tasty. The Cocteles de Mariscos, Mexico’s version of a shrimp cocktail, was very good as was a shrimp dish—named ‘Agua Chile’.
I especially liked the tasty selection of salsas. And, yes bebidas! Beer, wine (nice selection, btw) and agua fresca’s…even a strawberry based drink with a kick of rum.
My favorite seat is on the patio overlooking the new riverwalk extension. Chef Hernandez shares his delicious recipe for Huachinango Chile Limon in my recipe section.
