I’ve received a ton of response to recent TV segments I did both in San Antonio on KABB and in Houston on KPRC talking about the best hamburgers and steaks to grill, so I thought I’d share more of the ideas today…after all, your grill is probably already fired up!
Numero uno – you gotta use a great bun. It has to be fresh and soft but sturdy enough to hold the burger together. My favorite all time buns are out at Alamo Springs Cafe. The jalapeno/cheese bun is phenomenal, and frankly, so is any burger combo there you order. If you’re looking for a road trip, head that way.
Next, the meat should be full of flavor. Ground chuck will have a bit more fat than sirloin or round but it will also have the most flavor. The BEST meat money can buy and the best you’ll ever taste is 100% Akaushi. Akaushi is also heart healthy in that it’s lower in saturated fats and cholesterol than other domestic beef. Akaushi is also a good source of CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid), a beneficial fatty acid that research shows has anti-cancer properties. You can find Heartbrand Akaushi at Green Fields Market and at Bolner’s or online.
Next, get creative. My favorite burger, so far, in San Antonio is from Zinc Wine Bar & Bistro. It’s a combo of a sun-dried tomato aioli, P3armesan tuille, cheddar, bibb lettuce with quality meat and a brioche bun. It’s so addictive that Zinc regulars refer to it as the ‘crack’ burger.
Travel and Leisure Magazine recently rated cities across the nation based on their burgers. San Antonio was named in the top 20. Houston was named number one. To see some of the best burger combos from there, click here. While you’re on my website, be sure to sign up for my newsletter.
