Don’t Take Your IPhone for Granted

September 26, 2011 By Tanji 1 Comment

As we explore the south of France on a trip we’ve saved for and planned for two years and counting, I’ve been careful not to keep my IPhone on.  Overseas expenses add up — I’d rather spend my cold hard cash on amazing food and wine.  However, when you’re lost in the heart of the French countryside, you’ll take drastic measures.  An hour of circling their toll roads and tiny villages and you’ll do anything to find your way out!

We rented a GPS system when we rented our car – it worked great to get us from Marseilles to Chateauneuf-du-Pape but proved to be worthless when we tried to navigate beyond there.  We took some amazing jaunts today – to L’Isle-sur- la-Sorgue and Fontaine de Vaucluse.   However, it took us at least twice as long as it should have–tense moments when you begin to believe the person you’re married to, the one driving the car, doesn’t have a brain!  Well, since I had the Michelin map in my lap and the GPS and couldn’t figure out which way was what, I’m sure he thought worse of me!

In desperation, after ending up in the quaint town of Orange miles from where we needed to be, I whipped out my IPhone and called on my Google Maps app. Viola!  Within minutes we were back on track and found our way back to where we were staying.  Who would’ve thought the IPhone would triumph over Michelin and a GPS system!!

BTW, the villages we visited today were amazing…more on them to come soon!  Cheers!

Ok, this one cracked me up!! I can so identify with getting lost in a strange place. It is the source of the most contentious moments in our marriage! But the beauty of it….it is all better when you finally sit down for that fabulous glass of wine and bite of something unique to your tastebuds. Treasured moments, for sure.
