There are plenty of great food and wine events in Houston, but the HLSR Uncorked! is one of my favorites. Easy to see why it’s always a sell-out event!
Most of the city’s best restaurants turned out Sunday night to compete in the Best Bites competition, and the rodeo’s award winning wines did not disappoint.
- Haven Chef Randy Evans
Some of the food highlights….Masraff’s with their incredible tuna tartar tacos, Haven Chef Randy Evans with a delicious wild boar chili and Brennan’s with its signature Turtle Soup.

There were some noteworthy wines being poured – Antinori’s Sassicaia along with their Grand Champion Best of Show Srl Guado al Tasso 2007. Another delicious find was the Cellar Costers del Ros L’Obila Priorat 2004 which was the Reserve Grand Champion Best of Show.
- Davis Family’s Pinot Noir
Guy Davis, owner of the popular Davis Family wines was there pouring his incredible cabernet and his silky Davis Pinot Noir.
And, Texas’ own Messina Hof wines were well represented with owners Merrill and Paul Bonarrigo pouring their winning Solera.

Most of the rodeo award winning wines are available at many of our HEB’s around town.
- Matt Wheeler, Bunker Hill HEB Sommelier
BTW, I loved the pies from Royers Round Top Café, but even more wonderful were the pictures Bud ‘the pieman’ showed me of our soldiers who Royers sends pies to on a regular basis. I actually saw the big guy tear up—I choked up too!
A fabulous night! If you’ve never been, plan to go next year—it’s an incredible event.

Thank you, Tanji, for a great blog and for coming to Best Bites. It is a great event produced by such a great team and good hearted volunteers who are so professional. We are honored to receive so many awards and so appreciative of your support.
It was great to see you both. I look forward to seeing your new Fredericksburg tasting room.
