Sometimes a cozy, intimate restaurant that’s usually able to squeeze you in for a table is one of those ‘finds’ you just don’t want to share. Especially when the food is stellar and you can bring your own bottle of wine.
But, sharing good news is what I’ve done most of my career as a journalist, so here goes! A few weeks ago a friend of mine in the wine biz suggested a spot I’d never heard of for lunch. The location was very convenient, on Taft just off Allen Parkway.
This restaurant isn’t one of those over the top, decked-out, designer driven restaurants. In fact, unless you’re looking for it, you’d probably drive right by…but don’t. When you see the sign for Lucio’s BYOB & Grill, make time for lunch or dinner…pull in. Lucio’s has a nice feel –low key, casual and unpretentious… it’s the food that shines here!
My friend suggested their fish, and on that visit it was a delicious choice. Fresh redfish on a bed of farro (one of my favorite sides) and topped with the tastiest poblano jam ever.
On a return visit with my husband, the ‘pulled lamb’ with gnocchi was an excellent starter. So fabulous, I almost ordered a second helping. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the gnocchi was absolutely perfect, not too mushy and not too doughy—something that’s tough to achieve when making gnocchi.
My entree that evening was another fish dish – the red snapper with gnocchi and a caldera sauce—savory, not overly spicy. Pan sautéed, this fish was incredibly fresh and surrounded by roasted peppers—delish.
And, since it’s BYOB, we brought an incredible Antinori single vineyard Brunello that paired beautifully with our meal…especially the lamb. The corkage was a reasonable $8. In case you don’t want to bring your own bottle, no worries as there is a wine list to order from.
Lucio’s is open for lunch and dinner and closed on Sundays. For more information on restaurants, great recipes and wine ideas head to Goodtaste.tv. While you’re there sign up for a chance to win a Shane Diet & Fitness Weekend at the Westin La Cantera Hill Country Resort.
