Just in time for the REAL dog days of summer, news that drinking wine just might protect you from those nasty sunburns. Really?
About a year or two ago, I caught a headline on the MSNBC post, which read ‘Drink Wine, Don’t Get Sunburned’. It sounded too good to be true. The study was done in Spain and says there’s a compound found in grapes or even grape derivatives that may protect skin cells from ultraviolet radiation!
Flavanoids in grapes, which work like antioxidants, are believed to stop a chemical reaction in your body from sun exposure that kills skin cells and causes sun damage.
Here’s the catch…if you read the actual study, it appears this protection isn’t from drinking wine but from adding these flavanoid compounds to sunscreen products.
But hey, a glass of wine after a day in the sun just might lessen the pain….sounds good anyway. Rosé anyone? 😉
