Have you seen the clever H-E-B television commercial that started airing during the Super Bowl? You know, the one with the woman who invented the hugely popular Bacon Jam product that the giant grocer sells? Troy Aikman even has a cameo appearance in the spot.
The ads, promoting H-E-B Primo Picks: Quest for Texas’ Best, are definitely attention getting, but what’s even more eye-popping is the contest running statewide that gives culinary entrepreneurs a chance to win big bucks if their project is chosen as the next H-E-B Primo Pick!
The third place winner receives $10,000, second place $15,000, first place $20,000, and the Grand Prize winner gets a whopping $25,000. Plus, their award-winning product gets named a “Texas Best” Primo Pick.
I spoke to James Harris, H-E-B Director of Supplier Diversity, to find out what have been the most popular submissions so far. He tells me that spices and barbeque sauces have been very popular submissions. After all, this is Texas!
If you have a Texas-based food product you’ve developed or beverage, why not jump in! There’s all kinds of information about the process, rules and other details at www.heb.com/quest. The submission process runs through March 31.
Also, keep an eye out for the Primo Picks teams that will be visiting H-E-B locations throughout the state. Not only will they be offering samples to taste of some of the delish Primo Picks products, but they can also answer questions you might have.
Their next Houston stop is Friday, March 7, during the H-E-B Montrose Market’s Food Truck Friday festival from 5 PM – 9 PM.
BTW, if you’ve never tried it, Bacon Jam is an amazing product! Now, there’s even a Jalapeño Bacon Jam. Check out our recipe on Goodtaste.tv for Pork Medallions in a Creamy Jalapeno Bacon-Cherry Glaze. Just like bacon, Bacon Jam makes everything taste better!
For a limited time at H-E-B in celebration of TexFest, when you buy any jar of the popular Soppin’ Sauce, you get a jar of Bacon Jam free.
There’s a new flavor of Soppin’ Sauce too – Smoky Soppin’ Sauce…perfect for this skirt steak recipe that you could also use for finger-lickin’ ribs!
I’ve got tons of great recipes from some of Houston’s top chefs and beyond on Goodtaste.tv.
