Some of the best Mother’s Day gifts I’ve ever received weren’t really gifts at all, at least not in the traditional sense — they weren’t wrapped with paper and bows.
Mother’s Day lunches and brunches are always wonderful, but so too are the little things made at home. I still remember once when my son, about 5 at the time, brought me breakfast in bed…nearly a pound of bacon! It’s the one thing he knew for certain how to prepare. Obviously, I taught him well. 🙂
I’ve put together some delicious Mother’s Day recipe ideas if you, too, enjoy those holidays spent at home with family. For starters, Lavender and Brie biscuits. This recipe comes from Victoria’s Black Swan Inn, a beautiful historic Southern-style mansion built of the grounds of the Battle of Salado on Salado Creek in San Antonio. It’s said to be one of the ten most haunted spots in the country. Maybe those ghosts hang around for the yummy leftovers!
At our house, there are no leftovers when I make biscuits from scratch especially when they’re topped with the Lavender and Pecan Butter that’s explained in the recipe. For weddings at the Black Swan Inn they serve the lavender butter on dinner rolls, and it’s divine!
I also have a wonderful Lavender Infused Sangria recipe that is oh-so-feminine and oh-so good! I make it with the Eppa White Sangria made with all organic juices and available at most H-E-B’s and other wine retailers.
Another stunning and equally scrumptious dish is an Orange Cream-Filled French Toast. You and your family will love this. I first tasted this at the beautiful Occidental Inn in the Sonoma wine country. I have very fond memories of the stay and this delicious dish. I’ve made it at home, as have my friends, and we all agree that it’s spectacular.
If you are dining out, there are so many good choices. Brunch is back at Haven. Chef Randy Evans and his team always do a great job.
And my longtime fave in Uptown – Masraff’s! Any meal at Masraff’s any time is wonderful, but on special occasions they go beyond exceeding expectations. Check out the featured dessert – Tony’s Meringue Glacé w/Strawberries. The meringues melt in your mouth! I love this dessert and am urging the Masraff’s to put it on the menu permanently!
Another beautiful Mother’s Day brunch dish is at Liberty Kitchen & Oysterette located on San Felipe—Shirred Eggs with Lobster. I recently featured this dish on KPRC TV. Talk about a dish made for a queen.
