When the right chef and the right winery hook up for a special wine dinner, the memories of that fabulous meal linger for days to come. A friend of mine who is a news anchor on the west coast recently sent me an email with a ‘must do’ subject line. Attached was an invitation to attend a wine pairing dinner this fall that I couldn’t say no to — Gatsby at Hearst Castle.
If you’ve ever been to Hearst Castle, then you know the grandeur, the bizarreness that fills those gilded halls. Walking through those ornate rooms you can’t help but picture what was back in the day. It’s said an invitation to the Hearst Castle for the weekend was one of the most coveted social gets of the time. Hearst’s friends from far and wide travelled hours by train to party the entire weekend at the giant estate with the who’s who of west coast society and beyond.
This special wine pairing dinner in September will not only be memorable because of its location but also for the incredible wines and food that will be served. DAOU wines, one of Paso Robles premier producers, will be paired with the popular Thomas Hill Organics, a charming bistro in the heart of Paso Robles known for its delicious, creative organic dishes.
I’ve been to DAOU winery, and it’s one of the most stunning venues you’ll visit in Paso Robles. It sits high above the valley with a vista like no other. In a region known for its Rhone varietals, DAOU is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon. I have no doubt we’ll taste some amazing wine at the Hearst event.
