Remember to tune in to our brand new guest segments on Austin’s KEYE-TV, Monday mornings at 9 AM on their We Are Austin program! Labor Day was no exception for us…
We’re featuring bargain wine finds and some really nice craft beers to go along with this behemoth of a burger from Chef Jack Gilmore of Jack Allen’s Kitchen. This is his incredible Green Chile Cheese Burger made from locally-sourced green chiles, pepper jack cheese, dill pickles and jalapeño mayonnaise.
To pair, I like Odell Brewing Company’s 90 Shilling beer [left]. Think of it as a lighter version of a Scottish Ale. It’s nice and malty, yet surprisingly smooth. Great with almost anything off your grill, especially a burger like this.
Another selection I favor with Jack’s burger is Franconia’s Bavarian Style Wheat Beer — super citrusy — you’ll taste the orange and coriander right away. It’s an excellent beer for folks who don’t drink much beer. The taste is very refreshing.
If you’re a wine guy or gal like myself, you may know that Beaujolais and burgers can go hand in hand. The Beaujolais Villages wines are fruity, light and don’t contain a high amount of tannins. For less than $10 a bottle, it’s the perfect burger wine to serve chilled on a sunny holiday like today ;).
When in doubt, pick a Pinot. The Hob Nob Pinot Noir is a French Pinot that’s well-balanced and more traditional. It’s great for year-round use and has a nice cherry flavor, which compliments grilled fare quite nicely! It’s also less than $15 at most retailers.
Then there’s this award-winning Kunde Chardonnay [shown right] — 90+ rated, light and versatile, with pleasing flavors of honey, pear and creamy notes of vanilla. Kunde’s Chardonnay is also not overly oaked, which I can appreciate. Chardonnay fans, this is a keeper!
