It’s Puro San Antonio in every sense of the word! No visit to the Alamo City is complete without a stop in historic Market Square. Housed within this quaint enclave in downtown is where you’ll find this tasty treasure, La Margarita, since 1981. Challenge your palate with some of the most exciting dishes from across the border, including La Margarita’s Sizzling Fajitas — the first place EVER in the United States to serve them this way!
Resident chef, Cariño Cortez, is part of the third generation of her family to help run this mecca for Mexican cuisine, which began when the Cortez family opened Mi Tierra’s back in 1941. La Margarita is equally known for its culturally diverse menu…so let’s dive right in, shall we?
One of the most popular dishes is the Parrillada (Estilo La Margarita) — generous family-style servings of carefully tenderized, marinated and charboiled meats (pollo al carbon, beef fajitas, ribs, country sausage). Simply known as the best of the best. Talk about a mouthwatering presentation when it comes out ready and sizzling… 🙂
Then there’s the baked Oysters La Margarita, featuring the freshest Gulf Oysters on the half-shell with a delicious homemade cocktail sauce, and topped with melted Monterrey Jack cheese. Served hot with pico de gallo and guacamole:
The Filete Acapulco is fabulous sampler – and one of six house specials! Grilled fish filet and shrimp (3), topped with a lush garlic butter sauce and served with a seafood enchilada, white rice, frijoles a la charra and avocado salad:
La Margarita’s Ceviche is something Chef Cortez claims she has everyday during lunch. Theirs is a unique cocktail of white fish marinated in fresh lime and pico de gallo, and topped with sliced avocado:
The venue is also a shoe-in for private parties, as the upstairs balcony seats up to 175 people comfortably! The atmosphere is always so festive here. Pick a nice day to sit outside amongst the fresh produce, piñatas and wandering Mexican troubadours, and soak it all in!

Had lunch combo beef and chicken fajitas. The meat was the most tender I have ever had – both beef and chicken with incredible flavor.
