It’s the time of year to go BIG with small plates. Festive finger foods are part of the fabric of the holidays and we’re here to help you get your fill! Find a variety of easy hors d’oeuvres for entertaining at home over these next couple of weeks – no need for utensils! There’s a reason we keep nibbling away…
I handpicked these Walnut Fennel Tarts from one of my all-time favorite cookbooks, Cooking with Les Dames d’Escoffier, to enjoy over the holidays. Wee tarts (nut-specked shortbread) topped with caramelized onion, apple and grated Gruyère cheese:
Hog dog! This Hot Smoked Salmon is perfect in bite-size portions, served on a Ritz Cracker with caviar. For when you’re feeling fabulous. 😉
Up next, a couple of ‘star’ dishes featured on our new TV series, Goodtaste with Tanji. Both come compliments of my friends at H-E-B Cooking Connection. 🙂
We debuted this charred beauty on our most recent episode of Season 2! This Grilled Pulpo (octopus) is actually pretty trendy right now. And it’s delish! The flavorful result is sprinkled with smoked pimentón (paprika) and plated with stuffed Queen olives. It works great as a hot appetizer on a toothpick.
Cooking Connection also shared their recreation of the pimento part of Down on Grayson’s famous Double Dip. This Sweet Heat Pimento is a tease with candied jalapeños and cherry peppers on top!
For something more elegant yet simple all the same, these Crab Fritters [above] are loaded with lump crab meat, zested with lemon and plated with a housemade ravigote sauce (lightly acidic).
This Shrimp and Crab Campechana offers another take on crab. A seafood cocktail that falls somewhere between ceviche and salsa. Either way, we’re sold! A very popular party appetizer in the south:
Special thanks to Chef Bill Rosenberg all the way from NoMa Social for sharing his new Roasted Butternut Squash Tosta. That’s a toasted ciabatta spread with fresh ricotta cheese and topped with butternut squash and a pumpkin seed pesto. NoMa means ‘North of Manhattan’ and is located in Westchester, NY. Looks fabulous!
Homemade Bruschetta is a must. This Double Tomato Bruschetta combines Roma tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, vinegar, basil, salt and pepper atop a toasted baguette crowned with slices of Mozzarella cheese.
Famous Authentic Italian Meatballs (Polpette alla Napoletana) from Luce Ristorante! Made with ground beef, ground pork and ground veal. Serve with Marinara:
I love getting viewer submissions, especially when it’s something I’ve never tried before. Geri Frye shared these Glazed Texas Tots…bacon-wrapped rolled in Turbinado sugar (sugar in the raw). About 15 minutes in oven for the sugar to fully caramelize. Yum!!
Also be sure to try Geri’s Texas Spiced Pecans.
Combine traditional Mexican Masa tamales with ginger, nutmeg, raisins and pumpkin for delectable Pumpkin Pie Tamales that can also double as a pretty sweet side dish…
