The home cooks are so good in New Orleans that finding a restaurant to compete with Mama’s cooking is a tough task. But the lines for Mother’s Restaurant are always long because they’ve been mastering Cajun favorites for nearly 80 years. You’ll find bubbling hot pots of gumbo, steamy bowls of shrimp creole, and of course, the “World’s Best Baked Ham,” as the sign outside reads! This weekend, we’ll show you the secrets behind their jazzy jambalaya and heavenly hams that used to feed hungry longshoremen.
Just beyond the French Quarter sits a lively spot in the Carrollton Historic District that’s putting a healthy spin on coastal Cajun classics. Down the Bayou, or “DTB” as it’s known, is the creation of a longtime New Orleans chef and former professional poker player. Odds are, you’ll love this gorgeous gathering spot inspired by the Louisiana marshlands. Fresh vegetables make up the “meat” of their dishes like crispy boudin balls reimagined as a vegan dish with portabella mushrooms. You can indulge without the guilt with small plates like the chicken tartine with a luscious ladle of sausage gravy.
Mr. B’s Bistro
When it comes to the shining stars of New Orleans cooking, Mr. B’s Bistro is one of the brightest. It’s one wing of the famed Brennan family restaurants, led by Cindy Brennan. An elegant dining room with crisp white tablecloths is the backdrop for vibrant Louisiana cooking, with dishes like Barbecue Shrimp made with a luxurious butter bath. Their creole bread pudding and pecan crusted pie are to-die-for — and you’ll get the recipes for them! This weekend, we’ll show you how this amazing culinary family weathered Hurricane Katrina and came out stronger (and tastier) than ever.
