We could have sworn it was *just* Easter, but Memorial Day weekend is almost here! Get the grill ready for the big weekend with new recipes from local chefs. You’ll be a grill master in no time!
It’s “go time” for grilling wines, too! Get my latest picks–all right from my local H-E-B–below.

It’s hard to believe that juicy Bánh Mì Burger above is actually under 350 calories and contains less than 5 grams of sugar. Pickled vegetables and grass-fed beef make this burger delightfully decadent. It was created by celebrity chef Devin Alexander (you may remember her as the chef from The Biggest Loser) for her new cookbook, You Can Have It! We love this new cookbook that’s packed with dozens of diabetes-friendly recipes or for folks looking to cut back on sugar (aren’t we all?).
While you’re grilling this gleaming gem of a burger, celebrate your good health choices with the FitVine Sauvignon Blanc from H-E-B. It’s perfect for cooling off near the heat of the grill and contains just 90 calories and less than a gram of sugar. More details on it and tips for drinking wine on a diet here.
Korean Ssamjang
Stoke the fire in your taste buds with a great grill rub from Central Market. We’re ready for this sweet and spicy Korean Ssamjang rub that makes mouthwatering ribs, shaved beef and chicken thighs. It’s made with doenjang, or fermented soybean paste, and gochujang, Korean red chili paste. You can find both in the international section at your grocery store.
A grill rub this bold deserves a ‘criminally good’ wine — for that, I suggest 19 Crimes’ “The Warden” Shiraz. You can find it for just under $18 at H-E-B. Need a few more grill wines? Check out more great grilling wines here.
Sensational Skewers
Press play to watch my friend Executive Chef Danny Ybarra at Zinc Bistro in San Antonio walk you through how to make two seriously satisfying, but seriously easy, skewers. Make both the Shrimp Skewers with Gochujang & Pickled Pineapples and Bourbon Marinated Sirloin Skewers with Blue Cheese Fondue at your Memorial Day gatherings to please palates on both sides of the grill!
Sweet Rosemary Steaks
Raise the ‘steaks’ with this new recipe for Sweet Rosemary Glazed Steaks from Chef Nina Wilhite at Nick’s Fish Dive & Oyster Bar in The Woodlands. This marinade is so easy to whip up and the result is a luxuriously flavored and juicy steak.
We’re loving the Aldonza Classico from Spain with grilled meats, which is a well-balanced red blend that’s primarily sourced from Tempranillo grapes. At H-E-B, you’ll love its “well-balanced” price of just $15 a bottle. Get more details on it here.
