This weekend on Goodtaste with Tanji, we’re starting in Llano, Texas, at Badu 1891. Here we try the spicy Jalapeño Wedge Salad made with fresh organic produce grown in the garden out back. Then, we head to the small town of Fredericksburg to try cheesy pepperoni pizza pumped up with Kalamata olives, salami, and artichokes from Woerner Warehouse. Lastly, we make our way to McKinney for good ol’ fashioned home cooking, including meatloaf that’s, dare I say, better than your mom’s. To tease your palate a little more, here are 3 must-not-miss moments in this week’s new episode of Goodtaste with Tanji Season 4.
1. From a Bank to Badu 1891
Over 100 years ago, a business entrepreneur from Paris named Nicholas Joseph Badu made his way to Llano in the hopes of striking it big in mining. With international attention from the mineral resources in the city and surrounding counties, the town changed overnight from a village in the middle of nowhere to a town of importance. Little did Nicholas know the historic building he bought as the First National Bank of Llano would become what it is today. Over the past century it has been a bank, a home, a restaurant, a bed and breakfast, and now Badu 1891.
2. Risky Business
California transplant, Angela Mancino, has always been a risk taker when it came to her restaurant ventures. After moving to Fredericksburg, on the fly, she opened her first spot, Sunset Grill, which specialized in breakfast and lunch. It wasn’t easy, but with the help of family and friends who she recruited from California, Angela was able to make it through the first few years. Five years later, yearning for more, Angela came knocking on Woerner’s Warehouse’s door, back when it was still a feed shop. Angela wanted to sell her baked goods. Giving her a chance, the owners of Woerner’s let her start out with a little bakery case. Soon after, people began lining up out the door wanting sandwiches and salads and the place took off from there.
3. Cafe Credits
Karen Klassen moved back to her hometown of McKinney and started helping a friend with a catering business. When her friend got sick, Karen stepped in. After running the catering business out of her house, Karen wanted to open her own cafe – but it was 2004, and the economy was struggling. Despite everyone’s doubts, Karen set up shop with only a Kitchen-Aid mixer and two ovens from her own home. She didn’t have an oven in her house for three years. It eventually paid off when the city began growing and Spoons was a favorite amongst the locals. Now, many in town credit her as being a visionary because she saw the potential in McKinney that no one else did.
Tune in this weekend for delicious food and MORE during the ALL NEW episode of Goodtaste with Tanji.
