Tis the season of a good brewhaus and hefeweizen! It’s October, which means Oktoberfest festivals, and this year, we’re planning a full-on celebration at home! We’ve rounded up four favorite German-inspired recipes, and if you are in the Houston area be sure to stop by Kuhl-Linscomb for some festive decor too!
Pumpkin Beer Pretzels
Fall requires all-things pumpkin, including pretzels and this chipotle queso from Half Baked Harvest. If you’re intimidated by making your own pretzels don’t be—they are pretty forgiving when it comes to rising and definitely worth the effort!
Schnitzel Over Buttered Spaetzle
This full-on German family meal from Spoon Fork Bacon is sehr gut. The sweet and sour cabbage compliments the rest of the meal really well, and although there are multiple components involved in this recipe, each one is pretty simple to make and some stuff can be made ahead of time; i.e. the spätzle and cabbage … and even the gravy!
Beer Cheddar Soup and Kielbasa Sausage
This rich and cheesy broth from Chris Shepherd at Underbelly in Houston is a satisfying side dish on its own but goes full-on main course with the addition of seared kielbasa.
Goodtaste’s Roasted Sausage Skillet with Apples
What is better than an impressive, dinner party-worthy dish that also has low-fuss, weeknight ease? This one-skillet dish combines seared sausages and tender sweet apples with crisp bitter greens and toasty walnut vinaigrette. It’s unexpected, but all fuses together for a satisfying fall meal.
3 Local German-Style Beers to Try
Altstadt Brewery: Fredericksburg
Altstadt Brewery’s Kolsch resembles those from where the style originated in Cologne, Germany, but only it’s made right here in Texas! This delicate brew is a crisp, well-balanced beer with a touch of hops at the end.
Klaus Brewing Company: Houston
Klaus Brewing Company makes their own version of this Classic Bavarian Lager that’s recognized across the world for its namesake — Oktoberfest or Märzen! This signature style is a rich, malt-forward brew that is moderately strong and mildly hopped with German noble varieties!
Live Oak Brewing: Austin
Live Oak’s Hefeweizen is authentically brewed using a traditional yeast strain that naturally creates its signature flavors of vanilla, clove, and banana. Brewed with equal parts wheat and barley malts and few hops, it’s modeled after the classic wheat beers of Bavaria. It’s cloudy and straw-colored with a meringue-like head that lingers to the bottom of the glass.
And as always if you can’t find something directly local, stop by H-E-B—they often have the local selection you are looking for!
