Polish Potato Pancakes

Chef Jacques Fox of Artisans Restaurant in Houston shared one of his grandmother’s specialties with us! He grew up eating this classic and comforting Polish dish all the time as a kid. Chef Fox’s grandmother was a chef in Poland in her younger years and his grandfather had a garden with lots of fresh ingredients. He says they ate very very well at home! Chef Fox suggests you eat these with a roast with gravy, breakfast or anytime you are starving — they are that easy!
Meatloaf
This meatloaf from Killen’s in Houston Heights is inspired by Ronnie Killen’s grandmother, along with most of the recipes in his new comfort-driven restaurant. The secret behind this old school recipe is the simplicity of the ingredients, but more importantly the quality of the ingredients. The flavors will be sure to bring back memories of your own grandmother and make the whole family happy!
Bourbon Yams
Tanji discovered a decades old cookbook that belonged to her mother-in-law, Helen. She and her four sisters never let a major holiday go by without huge fanfare. One of Tanji’s husband’s favorites is the Bourbon Yams! He says his mother added the bourbon to their grandmother’s recipe, who would have never considered such a thing. Glazed in brown sugar, orange juice and, of course, Bourbon, you’ll think you’re digging into dessert.
Cuban-Style Black Beans & Rice (Congri)
You can taste the four generations of hard work put in by mom and daughter duo, Ruth and Diana LeClere, who have been tending the pit since 1969 at Central Texas Style Barbecue in Pearland. Fusing their love of Texas barbecue with their Cuban heritage, you’ll love their family recipe for Cuban Black Beans and Rice, or Congri. Meet the family behind Pearland’s oldest business and watch their segment on Goodtaste with Tanji here!
Cortadillo estilo Zuazua

If you live in San Antonio you’ve likely heard of the Barrios family and their four local restaurants. Diana Barrios continues to keep her mother’s memory alive, especially in the kitchen. She shared one of her childhood favorites that her mom would make for her all the time — Cortadillo estilo Zuazua. Think of it like a Mexican stir-fry: Beef is sautéed with onions, peppers and oregano until juicy and tender. Watch La Hacienda de los Barrios segment on Goodtaste with Tanji where Diana talks about how special her mom was here!
