We asked Don Thompson, the general manager of Morton’s the Steakhouse, how to save money on wine when dining in a fine restaurant. He gave us some great ideas!
- Order wines by the glass – less expensive than a full bottle and you can try a different wine with each glass
- Look for wines that are not labelled specifically as Napa or Sonoma—regional wines such as California or Central Coast can be a better buy. Also, look for wines from Washington state, they’re not as trendy as Napa but offers some wonderful wines.
- Look for ‘second’ labels. Often a winemaker will have a high profile wine like “Duckhorn” but offer a second label such as “Paradux” that will cost less.
