Life in the big city is changing. The sounds of chickens clucking are becoming more familiar in neighborhoods, maybe even yours. Chicken coops are popping up in backyards everywhere, and it’s all about healthier eating…for you and your kids. You can control the diet of your backyard peeps–no pesticides, antibiotics or hormones.
Even some major celebs like Jennifer Aniston are getting in on the action…she has a coop in her own Bel Air digs.
Laura and Jonathan Breeden are a young Texas couple with two adorable boys, who’ve also taken to the trend. They say it’s been a really fulfilling project to tackle for the entire family — and doesn’t require a ton of work either. The most important thing is that they know where their food comes from.
One thing is for certain: The eggs turning up at the Breeden household are healthier with the brighter yolks that have a richer, fresher taste. Plus, the kids get a kick out of eating eggs from chickens they’ve helped personally feed and attend to.
If you have a little bit of extra time on your hands, and the space, the Breeden’s certainly recommend giving it a try. They’re no experts — just fast learners! Check out a few of the resources below where you can buy your own chickens and get started on this new life skill:
