Now here’s an A-ok bunch who don’t take themselves too seriously. As the candid, lovable crew of Lagunitas Brewing Company will tell you, “We all loved the beer, but the mission was larger than the ordinary joy of a hoppy-sweet quaff.”
Lagunitas (lah-goo-KNEE-tuss) is a fun, witty brewery based in Petaluma, California, with a second operation in Chicago. In fact, they’ve just become the 5th largest craft brewer in the country! There’s a wide range of styles here, but their flagships include Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ and their ever-popular IPA.
The Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale is an American-style, filtered pale wheat beer. It has a strong hop finish on a silky body – great for both IPA and wheat beer fans. It’s available year round and certainly not lacking in the alcohol department at 7.5% ABV…hardly a little sumpin’ sumpin’ by any means! 😉
Lagunitas IPA is also a year round winner. It was actually the brewery’s first seasonal…all the way back in 1995. The recipe was formulated with malt and hops working together to balance out your tastebuds, so you can “knock back more than one without wearing yourself out.” Talk about a mentality! This indelible IPA is big on the aroma too, with a hoppy-sweet finish that’ll leave you wanting another sip. I’m almost certain.
Try pairing the IPA with a variety of food genres, from Thai to Mexican, Chinese, and Cajun food, as well as classic American barbecue.
Tony Magee, the founder, is just as interesting as his beers. He’s creative and quite passionate about beer and music both. Lagunitas is even a player in the music scene and hosts a very popular party for SXSW every year! Tony has also written a book about their story, So You Want to Start a Brewery…?
