When long summer lines and the High Noon heat are too much to bare, a quick and healthy bite sounds most ideal. A product of E. 11th Street’s revitalization in downtown Austin, Quickie Pickie is open seven days a week for those who need to chow down in a pinch or have time to chill…
Part convenience grocery, part café, part beer joint, Quickie Pickie is an easy going hybrid. It’s uniquely suited to its neighborhood in the same way the bodegas of the northeast, the packed little colmados of Latin America, and the bar-tabacs of Paris and Marseille are uniquely suited to theirs.
More than just “Where Cold Beer Flows” (although they keep an impressive 24 brews on tap!), it’s where fresh, unpretentious and delicious food rules the day. Fetch a bottle of wine, an artisanal baked good and take advantage of the wifi indoors and out while you wait on your order!
This hip sandwich shop does its part for the environment as well…all of their cooking oil is recycled into biodiesel by DieselGreen Fuels. Quickie Pickie was also named a Green Business Leader for Austin in 2013.
Now onto the good stuff. Among the few scratch-made items Goodtaste previewed on our recent visit, include the LOADED Spinach Salad [above] with lots of locally-sourced roasted chicken. It also had pickled onion, feta, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, olives, and lemon herb vinaigrette — all very fresh!
I settled on a menu favorite, the Quickie Chickie Sandwich: chicken salad (rotisserie chicken) with tomato confiture and farm greens on Sourdough bread. Just what I was in the mood for.
The Soup of the Day was also irresistible…cheesy Chicken Poblano at just the right temperature and consistency:
