The taste of Italy returns to your local H-E-B this October! Our universal love of all things Italian most definitely extends to the country’s wine selection. Goodtaste caught up with Wine Manager Michael Catalano of The Cellar at H-E-B San Felipe for a few of those ‘import varietals’ to keep an eye out for during H-E-B’s Ciao Italia celebration…
First up, the Villa Puccini Pinot Grigio from Veneto. It’s a bright and crisp pinot with nice acidity. I like this one very much as a porch wine or paired with lighter fare like seafood or certain pastas. Retail price is around $12.
Next – the Prunotto Mompertone. A blend of Barbera and Syrah with bright fruit and a soft finish. Try pairing with red meat or BBQ fare. Just under $20 per bottle.
The Canti Estate Barolo ($29) rounds out our top 3 picks. Made from 100% Nebbiolo grape with beautiful, bright cherry flavors, earthy tones and a strong floral note on the finish. There are MANY layers to a good Barolo, and the 2010 (in stores) had a tremendous vintage! A good pairing for this guy might be black truffles.
Enjoy – and remember to Ciao Italia September 30 thru October 13! For more delicious recipes and fun food and wine pairing ideas, subscribe to my newsletter.
