Restaurants are on the rise again post-pandemic, giving chefs, owners, and hungry diners everywhere something to raise a fork to! From the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast, there are so many brand-new restaurants opening up in our great state that we can barely keep up. Here’s a list of a few favorites to check out, offering such treats as gooey bread pudding, New York–style bagels, fried fish, and fajitas!
The Grey Market & The Diner Bar, Austin
This spring, James Beard Award–winning chef Mashama Bailey and her business partner John O. Morisano expanded their Savannah-based restaurant group to Austin with two new concepts: the Grey Market and the Diner Bar. The market is an elevated New York City–style bodega on the ground floor of the downtown Thompson Hotel, with retail goods, frozen foods, pantry items, wines, beers, coffee, and grab-and-go sandwiches. They are also serving up Southern comfort food with a little Texas inspiration like the blackened Gulf redfish with Texas-sourced grits. If you’re looking for a more full-service experience, the Diner Bar—also located inside the Thompson—is the place to munch on oysters and caviar while enjoying an all-vinyl playlist. 5th St. & San Jacinto, Austin, 737-257-3028 / 737-257-3047
Sadelle’s, Dallas
Known as a “brunch institution” in New York, Sadelle’s opened its doors in Dallas in March 2022. Named an essential brunch destination by Harper’s Bazaar and Cosmopolitan, Sadelle’s Texas location is a must-stop and a great way to get a taste of NYC right in our own state. The chewy bagels, cured lox, and glossy sticky buns are some of the best. For those whose cravings lean more toward Texas, they also make some killer breakfast tacos with chorizo, bacon, sausage, and avocado. 1 Highland Park Village, Dallas, 469-290-6009
Goode Co. Fish Camp, Houston
Goode Company Restaurants, one of Houston’s most iconic brands and a beloved family business, has added a new establishment to its line of award-winning restaurants: Goode Co. Fish Camp in the Woodlands. Born of the Goode family’s excursions to their “fish camp,” this casual seafood restaurant has a fresh seafood bar, a Texas-coast-driven menu, and superb cocktails. Don’t miss the freshly shucked oysters, loaded seafood towers, and more Gulf favorites. 8865 Six Pines Dr., Suite 100, Shenandoah, 281-947-9120
Z’Tejas Southwest Grill, Austin
In 1989, the first Z’Tejas opened in a refurbished Victorian house on historic Sixth Street in downtown Austin. Since then, Z’Tejas has become a premier dining destination for Mexican and Southwestern food in both Texas and Arizona. Its new location in Austin is an airy, modern space with Southwestern touches like handcrafted tile, copper, and jewel-toned booths. The bar is the focal point in the space, with a large window that peers into the busy kitchen. The updated menu features such dishes as Blackened Seared Ahi Tuna, Green Chile Mac ’n’ Cheese, Santa Fe Enchiladas, and Diablo Pasta. 14900 Avery Ranch Blvd., B100, Austin
Arrosta, San Antonio
The next time you’re in downtown San Antonio, check out this casual new all-day Italian eatery at the San Antonio Pearl. Inspired by the open-air markets of Rome, Arrosta brings the seasoned taste of Italian street food to Texas with a fast-casual café (or tavola calda as the Italians say) serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. With a variety of European-style pastries, rotisserie chicken, salads, pizzas, paninis, and more, you won’t believe this charming spot is in the middle of Texas. 1803 Broadway, Suite 101, San Antonio, 210-979-9950
