Need some inspiration on what wine to drink with dinner tonight? Whether you’re having chicken, pasta, or barbecue, we’ve got a bottle for you! Plus, all of these come in well under $20. As always, these picks (and many more!) can be found at your local H-E-B.
Up first is the Giesen Chardonnay from Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The Hawke’s Bay region is known for producing wonderful Chards that often cost quite a bit less than those from Napa. You’ll taste peach and nectarine in this wine and will love the lingering richness on your palate. Pair it with roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes, and seafood. ($12)
Some of the best wine buys are found in South America, and we think this is one of them: the Don Silvestre Gran Reserva Carmenere. If you’ve never tried Carmenere, this is a good one to start with. It has beautiful flavors of dark plum and blueberry, with a fun finish of exotic spices. Carmeneres pair well with roasted meats, spaghetti and meatballs, pizza, and even barbecue. ($10)
Speaking of wines that pair with barbecue, Zins like this Cline Nancy’s Vines Zinfandel also fit the bill. This bottle is lighter bodied than many Zinfandels, but the great fruit flavors of bing cherry and strawberry dominate. There’s a hint of peppery spice and chocolate on the finish. ($16)
