This weekend in wine is a special one. Saturday, August 1st marks International Albariño Day (who knew!)–a celebration of the Albariño white grape, grown and harvested in the northwest parts of Spain and Portugal. Albariño wines are typically very light and crisp – ideal for summer evenings and classic seafood pairings.
Albariño is a fairly versatile white. For example, it’s crisp, clean flavors compliment sushi perfectly. Now that’s impressive pairing to pull off! Other matches we like include soft cheeses and poultry dishes.
Two Albariños from the Deutsch Family have our attention on this special Saturday…
Mar de Frades
*shown above
- An “oyster” wine
- Albariño is the finest grape variety in Rías Baixas – located in Galicia, in the northwestern part of Spain, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Lots of maritime influence/minerality on this guy.
- 100% Albariño from Val do Salnes, Rías Baixas’ best sub-appellation.
- Artisanally grown and made with 100% free run juice.
- Innovative thermographic labeling: the blue galleon appears on the label when the wine is properly chilled!
Ramón Bilbao
- A delicate, complex Albariño also from Rías Baixas
- Hand-harvested; slow fermentation process
- Known for its crisp acidity – fresh & juicy!
