Wine is big business in Texas. There are nearly 200 wineries in the state fuelling an industry that has an economic impact to the tune of more than one billion dollars a year!
With all the interest and the tremendous growth in Texas wines, I asked Sommelier Steven Krueger, in charge of the wine program at the Westin La Cantera, to help us explore the ‘best’ of Texas wines.
Here’s the first of our series ‘Best of Texas Wines’. Steven reveals his favorite luxury reds.
BTW, Francesca’s at the Westin La Cantera has an extensive selection of Texas wines as does the Cabernet Grill in Fredericksburg.
Russell Richter says
I absolutely love the fact that Texas wines have become so formidable on the world stage.
The Lone Star State has always had amazing resources, from gulf coast waters to prairies, from oil to the Texans themselves. Among its greatest resources is its world-famous cowboy spirit. It is pervasive, manifesting itself in all things Texan: Texas beef and Texas beer, Texas crude and Texas medicine, Texas arts and Texas high-tech. It drives all Texans toward an inimitable Texas-style excellence. Whether they wear cowboy boots & chaps, lab coats & stethoscopes, three-piece suits or board shorts & flip-flops, Texans are imbued with an indelible and indefatigable spirit that drives them to their superlatives.
This same Texas spirit has driven (and continues to drive) the Texas vintners to create award-winning wines that are showcased no more beautifully than at La Cantera, which is the perfect place to explore the spirit of Texas embodied in Texas’ fine wines while lazing in luxury and surveying the rolling, mesquite-covered Texas Hill Country.
