Really! Sam Adams Utopias beer must be to beer drinkers what Bordeaux is to wine lovers. It’s said to be the strongest beer ever brewed with an alcohol content of about 25% by volume, and it comes with a hefty price tag.
The coveted beer is apparently a bit difficult to find (that ole supply and demand principle at play), so expect to pay about $200 to $600 a bottle depending on where you source it.
The beer comes in a copper-colored, decanter shaped bottle and has no carbonation. It’s meant to be sipped like a cognac. In fact, the beer’s brewer suggests serving it in a wine glass or brandy snifter.
Local beer expert and author Travis Poling says Utopias is more like a fine sherry or port…a good brandy. Maple syrup is actually used in the fermentation.
“It has a lot of interesting flavors you don’t normally associate with beer like there’s no hoppiness to it,” says Poling. “You can’t really compare it with anything that’s out there. I love it!”
I’ve never tried it, but it does sound interesting. BTW, I spotted a bottle or two over at the HEB Plus on Blanco and 1604…price…$199. Happy St. Paddy’s Day!
