It’s that time of year again! Getting into better shape and living a healthier lifestyle always top New Year’s resolutions. Each year, we’re learning more and more about what really works.
I was excited to sit back down with Erika Kaufman, Registered Dietitian from The Houstonian, who shared some sage advice for living a balanced lifestyle, based on the munchies you choose to pad your pantry with. She had similar suggestions when we spoke with her last year. Good taste truly starts at home!
Eat healthy, be healthy. Adopt that mantra and live by it. Erika is big believer in the role environment plays – how our immediate surroundings set the tone for our eating habits. Detoxing every now and then, in addition to keeping the right things around you on a daily basis can make all the difference in the world.
The first point she hammered home: portion-size is key. If you can spend that little bit of extra on pre-portioned products, we say make life easy and go for it! Buying in bulk works just as well, so long as you are diligent about separating your portions out as soon as something’s opened.
Eating slowly, just like Grandma always said, is the still the best approach. You’re actually giving your body time to respond and tell you it’s full.
Also do away with any refined white breads, pastas, grain…starches. Focus on whole grains, and especially try to incorporate more fiber. It will help to lower your overall cholesterol and stabilize your blood sugar. Watch our informative interview above for more specifics…
All great tips to get your kitchen detoxed and ready for 2014!
