We’re raising a glass to the great ‘nation’ of Texas with a little Bourbon! March 2 celebrates Texas Independence Day, which is when settlers in Mexican Texas officially declared independence of Mexico and created the Republic of Texas. (More details here)
Scroll for two desserts and two cocktails involving Bourbon — we love using Garrison Brothers‘ variety. They’re the oldest (legal) whiskey distillery in Texas. Contrary to what many people believe, Bourbon can be made outside of Kentucky. What makes a regular whiskey ‘Bourbon’ is that its mash (or the mix of grains from which it’s distilled) must be at least 51% corn, it must be distilled at 160 proof or less, placed in a barrel at 125 proof or less, and must not contain any additives. With that, cheers to you, Texas! Get started on your celebrations with the Yellow Rose Cocktail (above) by Ryan Foster at Juniper in Austin.
Bourbon Pecan Tart
Bourbon ice cream, Bourbon caramel…did we say Bourbon? This Bourbon Pecan Tart is pastry chef Shannon Gofreed at State of Grace in Houston. It’s made with a rich Bourbon filling with a hint of orange zest and of course, some classic Texas pecans.
Bourbon Peach Tres Leches Cake
Talking about a melting pot of melt-in-your-mouth flavors! Texas peaches are added to a traditional Tres Leches Cake for a dessert that taps into Texas’ special heritage. This recipe is from our friends at Alcomar, who we featured in our second season of Goodtaste with Tanji (watch here). Get the recipe here.
Brown Derby Cocktail
Hang your (cowboy) hat up on the Brown Derby Cocktail infusing juicy Texas grapefruits with Bourbon. It’s from our friends at Jettison in Dallas, using Garrison Brothers Bourbon. Try it here.
