Turn up the volume on your Mardi Gras party with some outrageous cocktails that you’d only find on Bourbon Street! Unique, colorful, and boozy, these drinks will surely put a spell on you and have you feeling like a NOLA tourist, minus all the walking!
The Hurricane
The Hurricane is the most popular drink ordered by visitors to New Orleans’ French Quarter, and for good reason—the fruity, tropical libation is designed to please many palettes. The rum-based beverage was created at Pat O’Brien’s during World War II when whiskey was hard to come by, and guests haven’t stopped sipping it since.
Frozen Daiquiri
The classic daiquiri is a simple lime and rum sour on the rocks, but this frosty variation lends itself to many flavorful options. Frozen, blended daiquiris are great for beating the heat during the summer months. We especially recommend the raspberry flavor!
Sazerac
The creation of the Sazerac has been credited to Antoine Amédée Peychaud, a Creole apothecary who emigrated to New Orleans in the early 19th century. Peychaud’s bitter, licorice-tinged drink was crowned the official cocktail of New Orleans in 2008.
Shark Attack
Warning: This cocktail is not for the faint of heart! No life preserver is needed when enjoying this boozy and “bloody” cocktail from New Orlean’s Tropical Isle, who rings bells and blows a whistle when you order it at the bar. Their recipe is under tight lock and key, but this version from Mix That Drink is just as fun to make at home. For a real showstopper, add your own grenadine-filled plastic shark when serving.
Voodoo Daiquiri
Voodoo is a huge part of New Orleans’s culture, so we couldn’t leave off a cocktail from this iconic (and haunted!) spot at the end of Bourbon street. Operating since 1722, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop is the oldest bar in America and serves one mean drink. This version of the fully-loaded frozen grape daiquiri from The Spiffy Cookie will put a spell on you with its mix of bourbon and Everclear.
The Resurrection
Like the name suggests, this cocktail is supposed to help “resurrect” you after a little too much partying the day before. Bourbon Street’s fan-favorite drink is made with blue curacao and spiced rum, and a few healing ingredients like honey and coconut water. If that doesn’t do it for you, nibble on the sliced jalapeño that’s served on top and that’ll be sure to bring you back from the dead.
Hand Grenade
Though this cocktail doesn’t pose any actual danger, it’ll creep up on you! Another Tropical Isle favorite, it’s known as “New Orleans most powerful drink” and served in an easily spotted fluorescent green collin’s cup with a smiling grenade at the bottom. Like the original, this Hand Grenade recipe from Dillford’s Guide has the unique melon flavor that makes it stand out.
The Fishbowl
The term “drink like a fish” has never rung truer. Fais Deaux Deaux serves their portable fish bowl with a neck strap so you won’t lose it, but this shareable punch version from Delish will leave less room for spillage. Perfect for hosting a crowd, this big-batch cocktail literally comes together in minutes.
