We’re cooking richer and heartier this season and need a wine (or two) that’ll stand up to those bold flavors. Our team rounded up some of our top picks—reds, whites, and sparklings—that will pair perfectly with all the cozy comfort food you’re digging into this autumn. You can find all these picks and more at your local H-E-B!
Oberon Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
This easy-drinking Sauvignon Blanc is made by the very well-respected Michael Mondavi family. It’s from Napa Valley, so it’s a bit rounder in mouthfeel and flavor than its New Zealand counterparts. You’ll taste apples, melons, even a hint of passion fruit, all of which pairs beautifully with creamy cheeses, fish dishes, and lightly spiced Thai food. ($17)
Lapis Luna Zinfandel
The Zinfandel from the northern coast of California has a medium-to-light body. You’ll taste brighter fruits like plum and blackberry with hints of dark chocolate, pepper, and spices. This wine is smooth and juicy, with a long finish. ($15)
Rosso di Montalcino Col D’Orcia
Rosso di Montalcino is a classic wine, made with pure Sangiovese grapes. The color is a deep ruby with violet hues; the aroma is fruity, with notes of small red ripe fruits, blackberry, and cherry, well balanced with oak spices; and the structure is soft with pleasant tannins. ($26)
Domaine de la Perrière Sancerre
Sancerre—a brisk French white made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape—drinks as crisp as a cool fall evening, with stone fruit aromas and mineral-rich flavors that mirror the rocky soil it’s grown in. ($33)
Louis Jadot Pouilly-Fuissé
A full-bodied white with medium acidity, this French wine has aromas of red apples and white flowers and tastes of toasted nuts and citrus. Serve with creamy pastas, lemony risotto, or grilled vegetables. This is also a great wine to pour with your roasted salmon. ($31)
Francis Coppola Director’s Cut Cabernet Sauvignon
Dark and succulent with medium density, this fragrant wine is an excellent fall sip. The ripe fruit notes and rich spices make it a superb pairing for a big pork roast, but it’s also balanced enough to drink on its own. ($18)
J Vineyards Cuvee 20 Brut
When fall rolls around, we stock our wine fridge with this easy-to-drink bubbly from J Vineyards in California’s Russian River Valley. It strikes a perfect balance between notes of crisp, tart apple and round, creamy yeast, making it a great match for foods and solo sipping alike. ($34)
Louis Jadot Beaujolais
You’ll taste plump and juicy strawberries and cherries in this wine. It’s great for a warm fall day—the high acidity and low tannins make it the perfect red to drink with a slight chill. ($12)
Light Horse Cabernet
This Cabernet is layered with blueberry and raspberry, with a smooth texture and a touch of oak. Not only is this a budget-friendly buy, the proceeds from sales of this wine benefit children with autism by providing them with therapy horses! ($11)
Lini 910 Lambrusco Rosso
You’ll find a deep garnet hue, bone dryness, and an effervescent stream of bubbles in this red berry–flavored bottle of Lambrusco from Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. We love popping it open with a savory egg strata at brunch, over an afternoon cheese plate, or with a plate piled high with Thanksgiving turkey and trimmings. ($14)
Love Noir Pinot Noir
This wine has generous notes of dark cherry combined with a smooth, silky finish. Fall for this darker-style Pinot that’s rich and complex and pairs well with savory, spiced, roasted, and stewed fall dishes. ($12)
