If you’ve been on our Goodtaste journey for all of our 15 years, you likely know I routinely confess to a love affair with Italy. My husband, Mike, and I have traveled there many times, but it was a trip back in 2006 that prompted my desire to take my career in a different direction. Little did I know, the Good Lord above must have agreed at the time, because one by one, the pieces started falling into place for the journey.
I’ve shared most of our Italian experiences here on the Goodtaste.tv website before and would revisit any of those previous spots in a heartbeat. But I wanted to share some adventures from our most recent trip in fall 2022.
Some New Favorite Spots
We traveled with four other couples and began our trip in Florence, staying at a VRBO property about 30 minutes from the historic town center. This first photo is from a place we affectionately called “Cheers” based on the popular bar of the TV show of the same name. We loved meeting up here. It’s actually named Osteria il Palagetto, a delightful bar and restaurant with over-the-top friendly service located in the community of Prato.
A must-visit spot for a glass of vino or a refreshing Aperol spritz at sunset is the rooftop bar at the Westin Excelsior Hotel in Florence. The views are stunning!
I’ve written a number of times about my favorite wine bar—La Fortezza in Montalcino. It’s grown in popularity and now has a tasting fee, but it’s still a fantastic experience if you are interested in Brunellos. You can taste more Brunellos here than at any other spot I know of anywhere.
About 7 miles outside of Florence sits the Florence American Cemetery honoring the American heroes we lost in WWII. More than 4,000 of our country’s best are buried here. It’s a somber experience to visit but worth every minute.
