After three weeks of religiously following the Adkins diet, I confess! I cheated this weekend…
Mike and I had to be in Houston Friday night for an auto dealers event (Mike’s a headhunter for dealers), and we made a mini-vacation out of it. (I do mean mini) We got a dynamite weekend rate at the beautiful St. Regis Hotel near the Galleria, had lunch at one of our favorite restaurants there Tony Mandola’s (New Orleans style w/Italian influences), then shopped at the grocery store of all wine shops—Spec’s main location downtown. Even if you don’t buy anything at Spec’s, it’s fun to check out all the thousands of wines from all over the world. And while you’re there, shop the chocolate isle! Wow!
So, with all the great food all around us, I guess cheating was invevitable. The nice thing about the Atkins diet, for me anyway, is that a little cheating might not necessarily change your outcome. The diet is all about counting carbs, and the goal is to stay under about 30 carbs a day. A square of dark chocolate is 5 carbs, a couple of bites of bread about 5-10. So, you can see, a little cheating doesn’t wreck this diet. I am back on the ‘wagon’ and have a delicious recipe for a lamb stew that’s incredibly easy, not to mention legal, on this diet. I make a large pot on Sunday night and then we have it for lunch for the next few days. It’s in my ‘Recipes’ section.
