Smear on that face paint, slide the grill into the back of your car and get out those folding chairs because it’s tailgating season, folks! If you’re like me and opt for wine for your pregame (but don’t want to deal with the breakable glass), check out these wine alternatives with tailgate-friendly packaging picked out by my friend Jamie at the H-E-B Montrose Market.
First, we have a boxed wine from La Vielle Ferme. Now don’t write this off! This French table Rosé got 91 points from Wine & Spirits Magazine in 2017. It’s crisp and refreshing, perfect for the long days standing outside in the sun and you get the equivalent of 4 bottles of wine in one box. Plus, it is insanely affordable!
Next, we have a handy canned wine from The Infinite Monkey Theorem in Colorado. This is for our beer lovers out there – it’s a dry hopped Sauvignon Blanc and is the perfect marriage of an IPA and fruity, slightly sparkling white wine. One four-pack is a little over a bottle of wine. Throw these cans in your cooler with the beer so it stays cold and crisp.
Our final pick is Crafters Union Red Blend. This bold, drinkable red pairs nicely with grilled meats like juicy burgers and sausages. It has a rich jammy quality, but with a hint of tannins. Be careful with these guys: one can is equivalent to half a bottle of wine.
As always, you can find these at your local H-E-B. When you buy six or more wines (bottles, boxes or cans), you’ll get 10% off your whole wine purchase.
