When the request came in this week to judge a cake baking contest I immediately said yes. Afterall, it’s cake…it’s bound to be good. Turns out this contest wasn’t about the ‘taste’ of the cake but more the ‘technique’ of decorating the cake. Four of the six custom cake decorators at the HEB Plus at Blanco and 1604 had only an hour and thirty minutes to create their entries. Can you imagine…I’d be a basket case under that kind of pressure.
Well these guys were cool as cucumbers, and choosing a winner out of the bunch was tough. In the end, it may have been the 100+ temps here that swayed the judges.
The winner —Gloria Martinez. The cake Gloria created looked like a scene straight from the Guadalupe River…tubers having a great time in the refreshing water. As you can see, she had tough competition. Also, something to keep in mind, if you like the designs you see there, HEB can re-create them for your party!
