There was a little something for everyone at the 2013 Paella Challenge at the fabulous Pearl Brewery. On Sunday, March 10th, the annual competition featured fine weather and even finer culinary talent from here in San Antonio and beyond. You’re in for a treat! It all begins at the Pantry, where various chefs come to stock up on beautiful produce that’s been donated (in large part) by the folks of Sysco Central Texas — a faithful sponsor all four years so far!
This event is a great opportunity to schmooze (and sample!) for the casual guest, but there is a grander game at large: Which chef can create the BEST paella? The air was alive and buzzing in the spirit of friendly competition. You could feel the energy from the live music, with wafting aromas too numerous to count competing for your every affection!
Host, Chef Johnny Hernandez, emphasized how essential it is to have the strong ties with Sysco, as both a provider and a partner in helping this benefit for the Culinary Institute of America come to fruition. Feeding the masses is the perfect ‘trial and error’ experience for its students to practice the techniques they’ve learned, while simultaneously encouraging creativity! As always, it was loads of fun. Until next year — I’m stuffed!
