Pull up a chair and feast on this! EPISODE 8 of our TV series airs this weekend, May 28-29, in select markets. A full listing of showtimes here. Killer Cajun cuisine, some of the best pancakes ANYWHERE, and an epic Sunday Brunch that brings down the house!
BB’S CAFE
Laissez les bons temps rouler – let the good times roll at BB’s Cafe! This tiny spot for authentic cajun cookin’ is open 24/7 owes its signature style to a New Orleans Mama who hangs out in Montrose. Owner Brooks Bassler’s grandmother, Maw Maw, grew up on the stuff and knows her way around a gumbo! Her roux, a luscious velvety brown consistency, is the stuff of legends.
When we stopped in, it was all about Maw Maw’s Grillades & Grits and this guy [above], the Shrimp N’Grits, a Tex-Orleans favorite; jumbo blackened shrimp sauteed in a zesty andouille cream sauce with celery, onions, bell peppers and garlic. Served over a bed of piping hot cheese grits.
If a classic fried Po’ Boy is more your speed, you’re not alone. BB’s best-selling menu item comes in ten different varieties and served on French bread flown in from New Orleans from the oldest French bakery in the US:
Put a little pepper on it – BB’s does do cajun right!
MAGNOLIA PANCAKE HAUS
Any day of the week, it’s almost always standing room only at this popular pancake paradise in the Alamo City. The Magnolia Pancake Haus enjoys an atmosphere reminiscent of your grandma’s kitchen, founded by one San Antonio family and a shared passion for flapjacks. Their recipe for success, however, doesn’t hinge on having the ‘World’s Best Buttermilk Pancakes’…
Owner Rob Fleming finally reveals a recipe I’ve been wanting for 15 YEARS…better than any apple pie you’ve tasted! The Authentic Munchener Apfel Pfannekuchen, (recipe is HERE) or “Fanny” for short, is the real deal! A family recipe translated from Rob’s wife’s Oma – her cookbook. This puffed, European-style hotcake boasts Granny Smith apples, cinnamon and secret spices (until now!) all combined to create an authentic taste of Bavaria.
It’s a one-pan wonder dish that starts in the stove and ends in the oven. Look for H-E-B Cooking Connection to help us out with two versions of this caramel apple masterpiece – the fully loaded original as well as one gluten-free. 🙂
BANGER’S
All bets are off at Banger’s – THE happening spot for Sunday Brunch on Austin’s Rainey Street. If it’s meat you’re craving, this savvy sausage house and beer garden covers all the basics. Brats and brews do the bulk of the business here, but fan favorites like the House-Cured Half Pound Bacon Steaks certainly tip the scale! Two quarter pound slabs of bacon cooked to perfection, served with a secret house-made bacon dip:
Meet the gang for early morning eats and Manmosas on the patio. When you’re here, you’re family. Pups are welcome too with an on-site dog park. Now about those Manmosas…some of the biggest mimosas we’ve ever seen!
