3 Can’t-Miss Moments from this Weekend’s NEW Episode

This weekend on Goodtaste with Tanji, visit a pitmaster in Austin who is smoking some of the best brisket in the city. Then, travel to Tomball, a small town train stop, for tea and Texas-sized desserts. Lastly, we journey to the charming German town of Fredericksburg, Texas and dine in an 1800’s hospital-turned-elegant restaurant. To tease your palate a little more, here are 3 must-not-miss moments in this week’s new episode of Goodtaste with Tanji Season 4.

1. A Family Affair

Miguel Vidal started Valentina’s in 2013 in the Southside of San Antonio with a few family members and his Dad’s backyard smoker. His Mom rolled out tortillas by hand while his Dad stoked the flames. After word spread about his mouthwatering barbecue and killer tacos, Miguel quickly outgrew the borrowed smoker. Valentina’s now smokes their award-winning meats in three hulking pits (each one named after a famous rock star, such as “Cobain”), but Miguel made sure to refurbish the original pit that got it all started and return it to his Dad. His Dad still uses it to this day.

2. The Cup of Tea That Changed Everything

After leaving her career in the corporate world, Cindy Vinick was meeting her two sisters for lunch at the local Whistle Stop Tea Room. While sipping on their tea, the three sisters wondered out loud what it would be like to own a restaurant and said they’d love to own a place just like this one. The current owner overheard their conversation and mentioned that they had been looking for someone to care about this little business the way they had. 17 years later and the rest is history.

3. A Texan Ratskeller

Tula and Sean Smajstrla found the perfect location for their new restaurant in the cellar of a century-old hospital. The beautiful two-story stone building in the quaint German town of Fredericksburg was built in the 1800’s for the Keidel Hospital (and to put an end to any rumors, the cellar wasn’t the morgue!). Inspired by the underground location, the Smajstrlas named the restaurant Ratskeller, a German term for a bar or restaurant located in a basement.
