CAMP VERDE
It’s a hidden treasure in the Texas Hill Country where camels once roamed. You read that correctly! Camp Verde is off the beaten path, in a quaint setting on the banks of Verde Creek. This 150 year old building is home to one of the top restaurants in the area, plus a general store with a rich history. At one time, up to 50 camels called this picturesque property home, shipped from Egypt to work as pack animals. Now they’re remembered in the art and architecture–even the cuisine!
If you’re like me, the Restaurant serves the kind of comfort food that conjures up all the best memories from childhood. Mainstays like Donna’s Meatloaf [above] made daily with spices, vegetables and topped with country-style ketchup – along with sensational baked goodies like this velvety Banana Cream Pie are prime examples:
Plan to eat, shop and spend the afternoon very soon. 🙂
THE BARN DOOR
Bring the fam–the Barn Door Restaurant was built on memories! 50+ years for this steadfast steakhouse in Alamo Heights; a haunt for Western-style decor, live music and a full bar, whipping up all kinds of southern favorites.
The Barn Door is homey with that intangible Texan quality you can’t quite put into words. Puro one might say. 😉 Fan favorites include the giant juicy ribeye, luscious lamb chops and mesquite grilled shrimp, not to mention those uber famous twice baked potatoes LOADED with cheesy goodness…
Our friends at H-E-B Cooking Connection help us re-work the recipe to Barn Door’s Creamy Garlic Salad Dressing with no cholesterol and lower fat. We’ll have the original recipe for you as well:
TOMMY’S
Slurps on oyster fans! We’re shucking some beauties at Tommy’s Restaurant & Oyster Bar in Clear Lake!
These tender sea treasures were plucked fresh from Texas Gulf waters just up the road…heaven on a half shell. Not only is the seafood superb, but Tommy’s goes the extra mile with sustainability. They’ve partnered with the Galveston Bay Foundation to quite literally save the Gulf’s oyster beds, participating in a massive effort to restore and maintain the reefs for years to come.
Here you’ll find’em raw, roasted or Rockefellered, along with prime steaks and an extensive wine collection.
