It’s a tiny roadside eatery BIG on taste with plenty of personality. We’re in Tarpley, Texas hiding out at Mac & Ernie’s, about 10 minutes west of Bandera in the Hill Country. Here, the menus can change in a heartbeat. It all depends on what Chef/Owner Naylene Dillingham is hungry for! Everything is homemade right down to the sauces and salad dressings in house. This is gourmet fare in a laid back, no frills environment. A true country find!
Not everything gets wiped from the menu. Naylene’s Ancho Chili Honey Basted Quail is a fixture for one. My friends at H-E-B Cooking Connection have the secret behind that smoky, sweet Ancho Chili Honey Sauce and will show you how to prepare it. The dish pictured here is a delicious duck sausage with blue cheese and fresh blueberries.
Bon appetit, Bakery Lorraine! Here you’ll find fabulous French-inspired pastries made deep in the heart of Texas at a charming bakery in Pearl. Owners Jeremy Mandrell and Anne Ng met while working at world-famous Bouchon Bakery in Napa, before switching gears completely, moving to San Antonio for tech careers. The allure of the kitchen came calling once again, however, and both decided to give it a go together.
Be prepared to stand in line for feather-like macarons (12 different varieties every week), exquisite eclairs and other tempting treats. Classic French creations that require a lot of finesse and an intricate skill set to pull off. The bakery’s remake of one toaster classic is a most popular item indeed!
A spot once reserved for a select few is now available to many. For the first time in 30 years, Manor House at The Houstonian is open to the public! Located on a lush 18 acres in Uptown, it’s a beautiful house with delicious creole from Executive Chef Neal Cox. Houston’s movers and shakers know this place well; a treasure trove of beauty, relaxation and creative cuisine.
