Tucked away in every town in Texas is that place only locals know. At Goodtaste, we’re always on a mission to find it – and try it out for ourselves! This weekend’s road trip through Texas brings us to an insider-secret spot off the San Antonio Riverwalk, a friendly Tex-Mex café in Austin, and an upscale gastropub right off Denton’s town square.

Zinc Bistro & Bar
When locals want a break from the bustle of the San Antonio Riverwalk, they head to Zinc Bistro & Bar. It’s an artsy little gem featuring a maze of charming dining rooms — even an underground wine cellar with some history! You’ll see lots of folks ordering grill-fired skewers with exotic flavors, scratch-made pizzas with homemade dough made daily, but they always come back for the burgers. One of my favorites is the Devil’s River Lamb burger, featuring a juicy locally-sourced lamb patty, layered with caramelized onions, serrano fig jam, fresh arugula, sambal mayo, and a luscious slab of triple-crème brie cheese — this weekend, you’ll get the recipe.
Maudie’s Tex-Mex
Austinites will tell you Maudie’s Tex Mex is one of the landmark Tex-Mex spots in town. The original location opened more than 50 years ago, serving classic comfort food. Tex-Mex traditional plates eventually trickled in and it’s been that way ever since. These days, you’ll find gluten-free, vegan, and even “skinny” editions of beloved Tex-Mex plates, but help yourself to seconds Maudie’s deliciously creamy queso and mesmerizing margaritas. This weekend, we’ll share the recipe for their amazing poblano crema enchiladas that you can easily make at home.
Barley and Board
Your next drive to North Texas gets even more delicious. Dine at Denton’s Barley and Board located inside the historic Lacy Hotel, right off the square. It’s an edgy gastropub championed by Hollywood actor Jason Lee. Sample three dozen craft beers on tap, sumptuous shareable plates, and down-home cooking with a sophisticated edge. You’ll taste that in their slow-roasted pork tenderloin with Mexican street corn, crispy onions, and chipotle honey. Sharpen your sous vide skills now because you can make it at home!
And don’t forget to stick around for my wine finds! This week, we’re talking Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs — perfect for any table!
