Football’s big day is almost here! If you’re still planning out your spread for Sunday, consider one of these crowd-pleasing soups. This is not only an inexpensive and easy way to feed all of your guests, but most of these soups can be made ahead and customized with a fun selection of toppings. No matter who wins this year, at least these hearty winter soups will leave everyone happy.
Creamy Tortellini e Fagioli
This hearty bowl is our own cheesy rendition of the classic Italian pasta e fagioli. We swap in flavorful tortellini for staple pasta and simmer aromatic ingredients for the ultimate complex soup. If you’re making this recipe in advance, do not add the cream and tortellini until shortly before serving. This way, the pasta doesn’t overcook and fall apart when you’re reheating the soup.
Game Day Gumbo
Taste of Home spices up game day with this rich and flavorful stew. Unlike traditional gumbo, this bowl has a lighter texture thanks to the use of juicy tomatoes. If you don’t own a Dutch oven, a slow cooker will also work!
Salsa Verde Chicken and Rice Tortilla Soup
All of your favorite textures and flavors combine in this one-pot power bowl from Half-Baked Harvest. This spicy, cozy, and healthy bowl is topped with creamy avocado and fresh cilantro. For a brothier texture, add rice to the soup while it’s cooking, or opt for a rice-bowl style and pour your soup sparingly.
Clam Chowder
Clam chowder is not your typical game day food, but we promise your guests will not be complaining when you hand them a bowl of this creamy, bacon and clam-studded stew from Martha Stewart. Plus, it’s very on-theme if you’re a Patriots household! Serve this chowder with crusty bread, hot sauce, chopped parsley, and bright green celery leaves.
Fat Flush Soup 2.0
Don’t let just the football players work out this Sunday. You can, too, with Goodtaste‘s Thai spin on our ever-popular fat flush soup. This soup has a creamy coconut milk base (which has been proven to help with weight loss) and is scented with turmeric, lime juice, fish sauce, garlic, and a healthy dose of fresh ginger. The garlic and ginger speed up your metabolism while the ground turmeric calms any inflammation. The bulk in the soup comes from lean chicken breasts simmered in coconut milk until tender and juicy, plus a generous amount of fat-flushing vegetables.
Foolproof Lentil Soup
Few foods do a better job of warming you to your core than a hearty lentil soup. Lentils are a great ingredient for entertaining: They’re healthy, they will leave your guests feeling full but not weighed down, and they’re affordable and easy to cook. This version uses toasty Indian spices and creamy Goya coconut milk, plus kale and sweet potato for extra nutritional oomph. This is a great option if you have some vegan game day guests.
Tortilla Soup
Forget the regular seven-layer dip and make THIS special soup instead. This recipe from the legendary Whistle Stop Tea Room in Tomball, Texas, will add a bit of kick to the big game! The secret? A splash of red wine for depth and richness.
Slow-Cooker Beef Chili
This slow-cooker chili from Bon Appétit gets all of its flavor from the dried chiles, so find the freshest ones you can get your hands on. Don’t be intimidated by this recipe: It seems like a lot of work up front, but once you get it going in the slow-cooker, it’s completely hands-off. Make the chili in advance and bring it to a viewing party—just don’t forget the toppings!
